What is Grease?
Grease is a thickened lubricant that is comprised of three main parts: base oil that does the lubricating, thickener that immobilizes the base oil, and additives which enhance the performance of the grease. In order for a grease to be effective it should:
- Stay in contact with the moving surfaces
- Not leak out under gravity or centrifugal action
- Resist being squeezed out under pressure
- Be shear stable at all temperatures that it’s subjected to during use
- Be able to flow from spot to spot in the lubricated machine, as needed
- Not add significantly to the power required to operate the machine, particularly at start-up
Why Use Grease Instead of Oil?
- Stays where you put it
- Minimal dripping, leaking and splattering
- Seals out contaminants
- Decreases frequency of lubrication
- Noise reduction/dampening
Additives and Thickener Types
CNH Industrial greases are formulated with numerous additives to enhance and maintain consistent performance.
- Antioxidants
- Anti-wear
- Extreme pressure additives
- Friction modifiers
- Dyes
- Anti-weld and solid lubricants
- Rust and corrosion inhibitors
- Tackifiers and polymers
- Viscosity index improvers
Lithium/Lithium Complex Thickener:
- Generally good to excellent performance characteristics
- Proven technology and performance
- Relatively inexpensive
Calcium Sulfonate Complex Thickener:
- Inherent EP/anti-wear
- Very high dropping point
- Excellent rust prevention
- Excellent water washout resistance
MAT Matters
There are currently no API specifications for greases; therefore, the MAT code on your grease label is what differentiates it from the competition. It certifies that our greases are tested and approved by CNH Industrial engineers to meet the demands of CASE, Case IH, and New Holland machines. Common grease laboratory tests:
- Unworked/Worked Penetration (ASTM D -217)
- Dropping Point (ASTM D-2265)
- Oil Separation (ASTM D-6184, D-1742)
- Oxidation Stability (ASTM D-942)
- Water Washout (ASTM D -126 4)
- Fretting Wear (ASTM D 4170)
- Water Sprayoff (ASTM D-4049)
- Bearing Rust Test (ASTM D-1743)
- Copper Corrosion (ASTM D-4048)
- Four Ball Wear (ASTM D-2266)
- Four Ball Weld Load (ASTM D-2596)
- Low-Temperature Torque (ASTM D-4693)
Grease Consistency
The National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) consistency number (sometimes called “NLGI grade”) expresses a measure of the relative hardness of a grease used for lubrication, as specified by the standard classification of lubricating grease established by the NLGI.
NLGI # | ASTM (60 strokes) Penetration at 25° C Tenths of Millimeter |
Appearance | Consistency Food Analog |
---|---|---|---|
000 | 445-475 | Fluid | Cooking oil |
00 | 400-430 | Semi-fluid | Apple sauce |
Zero (0) | 355-385 | Very soft | Brown mustard |
1 | 310-340 | Soft | Tomato paste |
2 | 265-295 | “Normal” grease | Peanut butter |
3 | 220-250 | Firm | Vegetable shortening |
4 | 175-205 | Very firm | Frozen yogurt |
5 | 130-160 | Hard | Smooth pate |
6 | 85-115 | Very hard | Cheddar cheese |
